It is a trade fair and conference for hospitality’s boutique and lifestyle design community and is underway now at the Javits Center in New York City. There are 30+ conference sessions and 550+ exhibitors. In 2020 tradeshows changed. But they still are a place to learn and connect and understand the industry better.
The event closes yesterday with attendance at pre-Covid levels. BDNY features a wide-ranging conference program showcasing CEU-accredited sessions and panel discussions from design visionaries, rising stars, and thought leaders alike. In addition, Designed Spaces, created by leading hospitality design teams using exhibitor partners’ products, are back this year, featuring booths designed by Westin Hotels & Resorts and EoA Group; Element Hotels and the Society; WorldHotels Crafted Collection and EDG Design; and DLR Group. Also making a comeback is BDNY Meet, a platform for targeted meetings between exhibitors and attendees. New this year is the BDNY Design Spotters program where influential designers will share their favorite product finds from the show floor on Instagram.
Secto Design presented Teelo table lamps to our US clients at BDNY. Teelo continues the simple yet stylish collection bringing in an additional sculptural tone. The clear yet beautiful lines of Teelo, together with the light source designed never to blind the viewer, offer an eye-soothing lighting experience. The detail in the design gives a sophisticated finishing touch. As with the rest of the collection, also Teelo table light is made of top-quality Finnish birch wood. Teelo comes in natural birch and walnut veneer finishes and is available for ordering at the beginning of 2023.
Members of the hospitality design community came together at the Javits Center for BDNY on Nov. 13-14, showcasing creative and innovative products across the flooring, wall coverings, lighting, furniture, textiles, fixtures, and more. Emerging trends include warmer colorways and an increased focus on texture, particularly in wall tiles and rugs.
Durkan received a Best of BDNY Award for its Abstract Artistry collection, which was borne out of a partnership with ArtLifting as part of the company’s Better Together initiative, a broad range of programs that allows partners to turn specifications into a donation made by the Mohawk Group on their behalf. ArtLifting champions artists impacted by housing insecurity or disabilities, providing a platform to amplify their voices and participate in the contemporary art market.
Arnavaz Barshan, Durkan Hospitality’s director of design, called the partnership a way to “give voice to the artists who traditionally haven’t been heard in the hospitality industry.”
While Durkan has worked with several artists through this partnership, Abstract Artistry focused on artists Marc and Eve. Using their artwork as an inspiration, Durkan created a soft surface collection that was simple, concentrating on texture and highlighting luxury. “We combined their two styles, keeping the movement and flow while also keeping texture in mind,” Barshan said.
Sustainability was another focal point at the Durkan booth, as Barshan noted all of Durkan’s products are made in the U.S. “The Made in the U.S.A. story is generating more interest,” she said. In addition to the delays and other issues facing sourced products, “People have started to acknowledge the need to do something good for the planet.” Barshan continued, “Brands in hospitality are trying to make a conscious effort, and are telling their designers to specify vendors focusing on sustainability. More awareness is happening, and we are very much on the front end of making that happen.”
Another company touting its sustainability bona fides was Nanimarquina, which showcased its ReRug product. In addition to using locally-sourced fibers, the rug is unique in that it utilizes 50 percent of fibers from other collections that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. Instead, Nanimarquina uses the leftover fibers, incorporating them into a base that consists of entirely new fibers. Not only does this minimize waste, it means no two ReReg products will ever look exactly the same.
“Our mission is all about sustainability and being climate-neutral, which we have achieved,” shared Scott Burns, vice president of the Americas at Nanimarquina.
Collaboration was in the spotlight at the Shaw Contract booth, which featured its Sense of Refuge collaboration with West Elm as well as Soleil de Mer, its first collection launch with Axminster.
Sense of Refuge is “a celebration of texture and technology,” explained Carrie Edwards Isaac, Shaw Contract’s vice president of hospitality. “It’s about going into a place where you want it to feel like home, even when you’re not home.”
Soleil de Mer, meanwhile, draws inspiration from the sun, sand, and sea of the French Riviera, as well as the romantic element associated with it. “It’s all soft, textural patterns, balance, and you leave feeling inspired and nostalgic,” Edwards Isaac said.
Shaw Contract also displayed its Rise collection, which Edwards Isaac called a celebration of the pattern. Explaining that this collection was developed as people came out of the hibernation that followed the COVID-19 pandemic, Rise features warm pinks accentuated by copper and brown earth tones, as well as an organic feel of patterns.
All of the collections feature customization tools, Edwards Isaac added, which can be found online.
Emser Tile also put its customization options on display, introducing its new Form Factor custom shapes program. Targeted toward the hospitality industry, this program allows specifiers to get any of Emser Tile’s products in one of 13 custom shapes: triangle, L-shape, chevron, amulet, bow tie, V-shape, half-hex, scallop, picket, S-shape, kite, rhomboid or drilled planks.
As Lodging Econometrics (LE) prepares to attend the 2022 Boutique Design New York (BDNY) conference in New York City, LE releases the latest on hotel development for the New York City market. LE also has available hotel development information on any market in the United States or any other market in the world.
At the close of the third quarter of 2022, LE analysts report that the New York City market has a total of 102 projects/17,805 rooms in the construction pipeline, the fourth largest pipeline by rooms of any market in the U.S. (behind the Dallas market, with 174 projects/20,676 rooms, the Los Angeles market with 118 projects/19,062 rooms, and the Atlanta market with 139 projects/17,843 rooms).
Of the top 50 markets in the U.S., the New York market has the greatest number of hotels presently under construction in Q3, standing at 69 projects/11,781 rooms. Projects scheduled to start construction in the next 12 months stand at 10 projects/1,733 rooms, and those in early planning are at 23 projects/4,291 rooms.
The three New York market tracts with the largest hotel construction pipelines are the greater New York City area, which includes Brooklyn East, the Bronx, and Staten Island, with 28 projects/2,073 rooms; the East River area, which includes Queens and Brooklyn West, with 14 projects/2,622 rooms; and the JFK area, which includes the area by the airport and Jamaica, with 14 projects/2,248 rooms. These three market tracts combined account for 55% of the projects in the market’s total construction pipeline.
The market tracts with the most projects presently under construction are the New York City area, with 18 projects/1,228; the JFK/Jamaica area with 12 projects/1,924 rooms; and the East River area with 10 projects/1,948 rooms.
For the first three quarters of the year, the New York market has ranked first among the top 50 U.S. markets for the number of new hotels opened in the U.S., with 20 new hotels/2,537 rooms, and is forecast to open the newest hotels in the fourth quarter as well.
LE’s forecast for new hotel openings predicts that New York City will lead the nation for new hotel openings in 2022 with 38 projects/5,066 rooms. In 2023, New York City is again forecast to top the list of new hotel openings in the U.S. with 39 projects/7,208 rooms.
